Health & Safety in Shanghai's Lane Neighborhoods – Walking Tour

On May 12, we had a walking tour of Shanghai’s Old City led by Patrick Cranley, President of Historic Shanghai. This walk explored the format of Shanghai-style lane neighborhoods, their evolution over time, and the mechanisms and forms of social organization that affected the health and safety of their residents. Hundreds of these neighborhoods were built between 1860 and 1950, and they remain a significant portion of Shanghai's housing stock even today.

The AIA has now launched its new Global Architecture Billings Index (GABI).  The GABI is similar in nature to the longstanding ABI, and is also led by AIA’s Chief Economist, Kermit Baker and the AIA economic research team.  The GABI is currently seeking global “panelists”—firms which will submit responses to brief, quarterly surveys on design and construction related economic activity; the data will be analyzed allowing trends to be identified.

AIA United Kingdom - Super Saturday Credit Extravaganza: Cambridge

On Saturday 14 July, the AIA United Kingdom chapter held a one day conference hosted by Dr. Mark Breeze at St. John's College, Cambridge University. The Super Saturday concept involves hosting a single day conference that maximizes the continuing education opportunities on a single day, taking in a variety of content including lectures and tours. Many of the attendees this year travelled that morning on the train from London and other cities in the Southeast of England in time for the first session at 9am, although we were thrilled to have an AIA CE chapter member from Ireland travel to attend the event. Several university students that participated in the chapter's student charrette in the autumn also attended.
