AIA UK - Science in the Age of the Invisible

AIA UK - Science in the Age of the Invisible

Event Description

The new Institute for Regeneration and Repair (IRR) will expand the University of Edinburgh’s research enterprise while strengthening the Edinburgh bioQuarter’s mission –
“To embrace and contribute to the next innovations in healthcare practice; to translate groundbreaking research and discoveries into new treatments and cures that will change people’s lives”…

We will tell the story of a unique interdisciplinary facility which bridges between healthcare and industry partners, a story of Integration and Collaboration at multiple horizons – at the Individual, the Lab Studio, the Building, the Institute and the Campus scales.

We will explain our story of Lab Studios which create a platform for intellectual curiosity to thrive and how we drew inspiration from Jonas Salk who asked Louis Kahn to “create a facility worth of a visit by Picasso” when briefing him to design the Salk Institute.

We will tell the story of Liminal Space and how it creates unique spaces for scientific inquiry in order to foster collaboration at the highest levels, promote engagement and teamwork and attract a new generation of renaissance scientists.

Together with the existing Centre for Regenerative Medicine and the new Centre for Tissue Repair, the new Institute for Regeneration and Repair (IRR) will bring together 600+ researchers with a focus on tissue regeneration and repair. We believe that buildings for science can perform with precision, reflect their unique location, possess great beauty, and inspire people – creating such places is our goal.

An architect and RIBA Client Adviser, Aaron Taylor is the company’s education sector lead in the UK, alongside responsibilities for Stantec’s UK business development activities.

Aaron is passionate about education design and has worked extensively within all levels of education across both the public and private sectors. He brings a clear focus on the need for synergy between curriculum and learning environment to his designs and how types of project-based and self-directed learning environments can contribute to attainment levels across our projects. His expertise includes provision for children with special needs (SEN), primary and secondary schools and particularly in the design of university buildings, including specialist academic research facilities, such as the new Institute for Regeneration and Repair at the University of Edinburgh and the Wellcome-Wolfson Institute for Experimental Medicine project at Queen’s University in Belfast.

As part of Stantec’s global education sector leadership, Aaron leads the export of this knowledge across our international education projects in addition to our work within the United Kingdom. It is his positive interaction with these users that leads to the creation of buildings which are intelligent, sustainable and timeless with discovery, collaboration and learning at their heart.
