Join us for a virtual tour of The Alder Centre by Allford Hall Monaghan Morris, a winner in the Professional - Small Projects category.
The Alder Centre is a building for counselling and therapy uses, providing healing for bereaved parents and anyone affected by the death of a child. Part of a wider masterplan for the Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in Liverpool, the Alder Centre building, although small is a key component in the continued development of the Alder Hey Health Park Campus. Internally a series of rooms configured like a big house set inside a secret garden creates a familiar environment for the counselling sessions. The architecture is easy to use and simple to understand and was informed by a conversational process with the counsellors, users and bereaved parents. The building is arranged with a large communal space in the centre that is ‘the heart’ with a lounge and kitchen from which seven counselling rooms unfold, each with their own private garden.
Speaker Bio
Paul is an internationally acclaimed architect. His work, channelled through his studio’s creative intelligence, is focused on redefining the built environment in the UK and abroad. His key projects in the workplace, arts, education, residential and masterplanning sectors have all been recognised with numerous national and international awards including the 2015 RIBA Stirling Prize for Burntwood School. Recently completed projects under his direction include reinvention of the Garde II listed Tower Hamlets Town Hall., the redevelopment of 1 Finsbury Avenue, the Television Centre masterplan on the former BBC HQ site, the reinvention of Liverpool’s Royal Court Theatre, and the radical remodelling and extension of the Curtis Green building to create New Scotland Yard, the home of the Metropolitan Police.
