Jacquiann T. Lawton is an architect who for over three decades has been attentive to environmental and social specificities of place through practice, policy and education in Jamaica and the wider Caribbean.
Her sensitivity to tropical ecologies, climate and cultural identity has guided an ethos for architecture, notably in Jamaica, as Juror for the Govt. of Jamaica Houses of Parliament Design Competition, contributor to the development of national spatial policy frameworks with the Natural Resource Conservation Authority, the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management and former Head of the Caribbean School of Architecture at the University of Technology, Jamaica. She has received national design awards for heritage monuments in the Heroes Park, Kingston as a Director of Compass Workshop Ltd.
Jacquiann’s leadership advocates for the regional intersection of professional practice and architectural education. Deputy Chair of the Association of Commonwealth Societies of Architects in the Caribbean, former member of the Architects Registration Board of Jamaica, the Jamaican Institute of Architects Executive and the Commonwealth Association of Architects (CAA) Education Committee, she has assisted the development of the Mutual Recognition Agreement of Professional Qualifications for Architects in Cariforum with the Secretary General CARICOM. Member of the Urban Planning Network of Guadeloupe, French West Indies and Juror, Order of Architects, Prix de l’Architecture de Guadeloupe 2020, she co-curated with Maison de Architecture de Guadeloupe, a retrospective exhibition on architectural education at the Memorial ACTe. She has been instrumental in the development of architecture curricula, its quality and assurance, attuned to the region, and has mentored generations of students. Jacquiann achieved successfully the CAA Validation of the Caribbean School of Architecture, Pre-professional and Professional Degrees (2022-2027).
Jacquiann holds a Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch.) from The Irwin S. Chanin School of Architecture at The Cooper Union and a Master of Architecture (MSc.) from the University of Florida, Gainesville. Since 1994, a Registered Architect with the Architects Registration Board of Jamaica. Senior Visiting Research Fellow at the University College London (2025), her research and publications on Island States continue to question topographies of practice and education through international exhibitions, conferences, seminars and workshops.
