Section President, AIA Oceania

Louise Cox has had wide experience in both planning and architectural areas, with particular emphasis on health, heritage, conservation, institutional planning and contract administration of major health projects. She has dedicated over sixty-five years of service to the advocacy of the profession through many organisations and government boards locally, regionally and internationally. She was President of the NSW Chapter of the Royal Australian Institute of Architects (RAIA) (1988–90), and RAIA National President (1994–1995). In 1996 Louise Cox was elected to the Council of the International Union of Architects (UIA) and was its President from 2008 to 2011.

Whilst UIA President she became an Honorary Fellow of the American Institute of Architects in 2011 in New Orleans, USA. She worked with NCARB in promoting equitable education for architects through UIA, CAA, RIBA and the Canberra Accord from 1998. She has attended at least twelve AIA Conventions in the USA since 1983 in San Francisco. Each time she was welcomed to the Presidents’ meeting between AIA and their International President guests and took part in the discussions and exchange of information available between them all.

Since 1996, she has been working on the advancement of architecture in the International Arena, in architectural education/validation, professional practice, heritage and a socially and environmentally sustainable built environment. Louise is very proud of what she managed to achieve for UIA, meeting so many of our member sections globally, the 11 regional architectural organisations, as well as with UNESCO and the World Heritage Centre, UN-HABITAT with the Habitat Professional Forum and World Urban Forums, Emergency Architects, ICOMOS, DOCOMOMO, IFLA and her liaison and connections with all the other similar, International, organisations. This has enriched her life and understanding of other cultures, especially the discussions at round tables with all the UIA international partners, as she wants to give back to the profession that nurtured her.
