AIA IR Australia - New South Wales’ Policy Roadmap to achieve Zero Emissions in the Built Environment

Event Description

The talk will focus on the government policies that the New South Wales government has implemented to achieve zero emissions by 2050, in particular the (Design and Place SEPP).

To develop connections with Country, the Design and Place SEPP seeks to create opportunities to integrate Aboriginal perspectives in built environment projects. 

The SEPP will establish 5 principles for design and assessment of places in urban and regional NSW

1.    Design places with beauty and character that people feel proud to belong to
2.   
Design inviting public spaces to support engaged communities
3.   
Design productive and connected places to enable thriving communities
4.   
Design sustainable and greener places for the wellbeing of people and the environment
5.    Design resilient and diverse places for enduring communities

It will integrate and align good design and place considerations into planning policy with a set of consistent set of principles including:

a.    Facilitating ecologically sustainable development by integrating relevant economic, environmental and social considerations
b.    protecting the environment
c.     promoting sustainable management of built and cultural heritage
d.    promoting good design and amenity of the built environment, and
e.    promoting the proper construction and maintenance of buildings, including the protection of the health and safety of their occupants.

Paulo Macchia, FRAIA, Director Design Governance, New South Wales.

Paulo is the Director Design Governance at the NSW Government Architects Office with notable projects including the renovation of State Library of NSW and collaboration on the Anzac Memorial Centenary Extension, winner of the 2020 Sir Zelman Cohen Award for Public Architecture.

Principal, Simon Wells and Associates

Simon Wells has been self-employed since 1981 specialising in refurbishing hotels, luxury retail, warehousing and small multi-unit residential developments in Australia and New Zealand.

A graduate of the University of New South Wales, Simon is a Registered Architect in the Australian States of New South Wales and Victoria and is an International Associate of the American Institute of Architects and a Member of the Royal Australian Institute of Architects.
