Keynote - Dr Trevor Nightingale - National Research Council Canada’s Construction Climate Initiatives: Enabling Policy and Business Innovation Through Research

Event Description

The construction sector is a significant emitter of greenhouse gases (GHGs), from the production of construction materials to the heating, cooling and maintenance of existing buildings and infrastructure. To achieve Canada's emission reduction targets by 2050, new low carbon technologies and tools are needed to support further advancements in the construction sector.

The Construction Research Centre at the National Research Council of Canada (NRC) is addressing one of the biggest challenges facing Canada's construction sector: decarbonization.

Together with academia, industry and governments, the NRC is applying its R&D expertise to support the development and deployment of low carbon construction solutions through the new Platform to Decarbonize the Construction Sector at Scale.

Before taking on this position, he served as the Director General of the Construction Research Centre for four years. In that capacity, he oversaw 350 research and technical professionals driving advancements in building science and engineering focusing on three key areas: climate change

adaptation and mitigation, and the health impacts of the built environment. Under his leadership, the center published the National Model Codes and the National Master Construction Specifications.

In 2015, Trevor spearheaded the NRC's High-performance Buildings program, which facilitated the development and commercialization of energy-saving retrofit technologies for commercial and institutional buildings.

From 2010 to 2015, Trevor held the position of Director of Research and Development for the Intelligent Building Operations research unit. During this period, he guided research initiatives in lighting, heating, ventilation, human factors, building controls, and energy measurement and verification.

Trevor commenced his career at NRC in 1992 as an acoustics researcher and holds a Bachelor of Science in Physics from the University of British Columbia, as well as a Ph.D. in Building Engineering from Heriot Watt University in the United Kingdom.

Dr. Nightingale currently holds the following positions Fellow of the Acoustical Society of America, Member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Building Acoustics, and Member of the Advisory Board to the Rick Hansen Foundation.

He has received several accolades, including the ASTM Award of Appreciation, the 2017 Real Property Institute of Canada Excellence Award in Energy Efficiency of Federal Buildings for Greatest Reduction of Energy Consumption, and two NRC Outstanding Achievement Awards between 2010 and 2017.

In the years 2009 to 2022, Trevor held various leadership positions, including, Co-Chair of the Canadian Board for Harmonized Construction Codes, Member of the Board of Directors of the Continental Automated Buildings Association, Member of the Industry Advisory Committee to the Canada Green Building Council Adjunct Professor, Civil Engineering, Carleton University, Ottawa, Canada, Canadian representative to several ISO working groups on building acoustics measurement and prediction, ASTM Committee E33 Sound Transmission Chair; Subcommittee Chair E33.03 Transmission Loss; Subcommittee Chair E33.05 Research, Executive Secretary of the Canadian Acoustical Association, Co-Chair of InterNOISE 2009, and VP-North America for the International Institute of Noise Control Engineers.

A visionary strategist and futurist, Adam Pantelimon joined the Government of Canada’s National Research Council most recently from the Government of Alberta, where he worked as a portfolio lead & director with the ministries of Health, Seniors & Housing, and Infrastructure. With Seniors & Housing, Adam held responsibility for 47,000 units valued at $7+Billions. Along with Infrastructure, he led the Capital Planning and the Facility Evaluation program of 12,000+ facilities. Currently a Technical & Policy Advisor, Adam is playing a key role in the Low Carbon Regulatory Solutions thrust of the Platform to Decarbonize the Construction Sector at Scale, and the development of the National Building Code of Canada. Moreover, Adam delivered 60+ resilient projects in commercial, mixed-use development, residential, and hotelier realms, concurrently managed nine school construction projects, led urban design, heritage, and seven Municipal Development Plans & zoning by-laws.

A Fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects, a regulated member of seven professional organizations in five countries, he is the Past President of the Canadian chapter of the American Institute of Architects, and the Past Chair of the Institute of Public Administration of Canada (YEG, AB). He taught at several European universities, and served above Arctic Circle with the Government of Nunavut.

Adam has received several honors, including the 2016 Canadian Institute of Planners President’s Award in recognition of a lifetime of outstanding contribution to professional planning. He earned a six-year BArch, a two-year Post-graduate Diploma in Heritage, Master degrees in Engineering and in Urban Design/Planning, and a PhD “Cum Laude” in History of Culture.
