Description
Everyday architectural decisions can significantly affect the health, safety, comfort, and well-being of building occupants. Design by Discovery explores how architects can use observation, research, and evidence-informed design to make more thoughtful decisions about the environments they
create. Using visual examples and case studies from residential, educational, and community projects, the webinar examines materials and finishes, indoor air quality, lighting, acoustics, accessibility, spatial organization, circulation, and connection to the outdoors. Designed for architecture students and entry-level architects, the program introduces practical strategies that can be applied throughout the design process. No specialized prior knowledge is required.
The theme of the 2026 AIA International Mentorship Program is Design by Discovery.
To design is to experiment. By questioning norms and continuously testing ideas, we unlock new forms, materials, and spatial experiences. This series highlights the power of experimentation—from re-use to radical rethinking—to expand the limits of what architecture and design can be. Participants are invited to share and discover processes that challenge, refine, and ultimately elevate our practice.
The mentorship program includes regular online group events which are open to all, as well as one-to-one mentoring.
