Event Description

Costa Rica has an opportunity to transform the urban development model of its Greatest Metropolitan Area. Such transformation can be deployed through the implementation of a regional electric passenger train system (EPT), a backbone for mass transportation, mobility, accessibility and urban development and regeneration. Further, this transportation system represents an ambitious step towards the decarbonization of Costa Rica’s transport sector, as well as for the implementation of more sustainable actions on its impact area.

The development of the EPT as an infrastructure project has been complemented by the creation of a multilevel technical board, composed of the 15 municipalities that are part of the project’s route. These municipalities have worked with public national institutions related to urban and transportation planning to consolidate guidelines for Transport Oriented Development, as well as for the integration of green and biodiversity regeneration actions and projects as part of a new identity and urban development model for the corridor. The presentation will narrate the components of this multidisciplinary and multi-entity effort to transform the country’s metropolitan growth patterns into a joint vision that places clean energy, decarbonization, accessibility and regeneration at its center.
