Event Description

JRA completed the refurbishment of Bush House, Centre Block, a Grade II Listed building together with The North East Wing, South East Wing and Melbourne House for Japanese owner Kato Kagaku & Co., Ltd following the vacation of the buildings by the BBC World Service in 2012. The buildings originally designed in 1923-29 by American Architects Helmle and Corbett to form an important group in Aldwych within the Strand Conservation Area. The proposals involved a conservation-based approach to the restoration, renovation and fitting out of the buildings. The buildings have been retrofitted with energy efficient plant, with new office finishes and entrance halls that are inspired by the classical materials and proportions of these historical buildings. King’s College London (KCL) signed a 50 year lease for the entire campus at Aldwych Quarter. KCL’s aim was to consolidate their position as a top 20 global university by providing world class education and research facilities. They took full occupation of the four main buildings establishing a new campus for student study, social space, new teaching facilities and academic accommodation. JRA worked closely with KCL to create state of the art formal and informal teaching spaces where collaboration, learning and research are supported by inspiring surroundings, aiming to foster communities and draw in the outside world.
