Greetings from AIA Canada

As 2020 comes to a new adventure, it was another busy time for our chapter!

The AIA Canada Society is the newest chapter of the American Institute of Architects. Established in 2017, the AIA Canada Society is committed to our mission of promoting and building the chapter into a resilient organization that is capable of fulfilling its mission, to advance architecture in Canada and abroad by partnering, serving, educating, informing and engaging our members.

Chapter Activities

1.     A new Board of Directors was appointed. The first BoD meeting was held on January 17th, 2020.

We held our leadership planning retreat on a
bitterly cold January day in person and via GoToMeeting Edmonton and Toronto and
are excited to announce several actions that you will see over the coming year.

2.     Chapter leadership participated at the 2020 AIA Grassroots event, an exclusive event for leaders of the AIA.

o  This year’s agenda emphasized component and
community leadership with workshops designed to help component officers become
more effective chapter and civic leaders

o  AIA Canada leadership engaged with AIA National
staff seeking guidance and resources to move from a provisional status and
achieve the Chapter accreditation

3.     Chapter leadership members are engaged on different AIA committee and actions.

o  AIA Knowledge Communities (Go to the PA website)

o  Adam Pantelimon, Intl Assoc AIA, FRIBA, President
AIA Canada, was appointed on The Public Architects (PA) Committee, which
promotes excellence in public architecture and enhances the role of the public
architect as an essential element in the planning, design, construction, and
management of public facilities.

o  AIA International Region – AIA IR (Go to the AIA IR website)

o  Adam Pantelimon, Intl Assoc AIA, FRIBA, President
AIA Canada, serves as the AIA Canada Chapter representative on the AIA IR Board
of Directors. The AIA International Region is the broadest geographical region
of the American Institute of Architects, providing a collaborative leadership
platform to empower members and encourage global success through best practice,
innovative thinking and design excellence.

o  Small Firm Exchange Group (Go to the SFX
website

o  Lara Presber, AIA, Vice-President AIA Canada, was appointed on the Small Firm Exchange Group as the AIA International Regional Representative. SFx Mission & Objectives are to advance the mutual interests of architects practicing in small firms.

4.     Expand the relevance of AIA Canada for society, and partner with other affiliate
professional organizations.

o   The Chapter worked closely with the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada (RAIC) to participate at the 2020 RAIC Conference on Architecture, June 3-7, 2020, Edmonton . The event is officially canceled due to the COVID-19 outbreak.

o  At the end of April, the Chapter will contact RAIC for a first-step planning meeting to discuss the opportunities for June 6-9, 2021 in Montreal.

5.     AIA Canada Website (Go to aiacanadasociety.org)

o  We are proudly announcing the launching of the new Chapter
website as per April 14th, 2020. We are committed to improve the connectivity
quality provided to our membership and link with the AIA International and US
Territory Chapters.

6.     AIA Canada is seeking to develop additional continuing education opportunities

o  Dora Ng, AIA, Director Continuing Education, leads the Chapter CES courses offered to members annually. New opportunities to be announced soon.

7.     AIA Canada plans to hold a virtual event later this year.

o  The Chapter plans to have the annual conference and AGM as an e-conference format. It will work with AIA IR, in partnership with the IR Chapters, to develop the e-conference for the autumn.  The format of this conference is under discussion. 
Sponsorship research efforts in close collaboration with the Director of
Continuing Education.

9.     AIA Canada awards program

Adam Pantelimon, Intl Assoc. AIA, FRIBA, President AIA Canada, and Jon Fulcher, AIA, Secretary will work to develop the Chapter awards program in coordination with the AIA I awards.
