AIA Shanghai Update - November 2022

SUMMARY OF Q3 EVENTS

We launched our first ‘Women in Architecture’ event in Q3. The theme was 'In Pursuit of Happiness.’ Our speakers included Tianle Zhang - Founder of Firefly Studio, May Wei - Principal and Director of Shanghai Office of CRTKL, Umi Lyu - Architect/Curator and RIBA Head of Development in China, and cellist Chihying Hsieh. These remarkable women shared their experiences on how to find happiness amidst the lockdown and how to become stronger after this crisis. The event concluded with Ms Hsieh's exquisite performance of Edward Elgar's Salut d'amour.

We celebrated the conclusion of our 2021-22 Mentorship Program at Jerde's new office. We thank our mentors and mentees for joining this journey. Our next Mentorship Program will begin in 2023.

We visited Jijiadun, a village 1.5 hours from Shanghai transformed by a group of people passionate about rural communal living. Tianle Zhang, the owner of Firefly Retreat, led the tour covering several well-designed house, villas and public spaces.

The Healing Environment lecture brought together healthcare experts who shared how a quantitative urban design toolkit could better shape a healthy urban area.

We visited the recently completed Shanghai Library East. The tour was led by Chris Hardie, Principal, Design Director at Schmidt Hammer Lassen and Perkins&Will.

Our chapter also co-sponsored and participated in other events including Shanghai Curtain Wall Design Festival, CADE | Be an Architect, and AmCham Shanghai: The 15-Minute City.

We concluded this quarter with our chapter’s FAIA nomination ceremony at KPF’s office.

Upcoming Events

We are lining up exciting events in Q4, including a Master Lecture with Edward Mazria FAIA on sustainability. Mazria is the founder of Architecture 2030, a think tank developing solutions for 21st century problems. We are also organizing a project tour to Wenzhou Kean University, our annual banquet, and more events in Beijing, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen. Last but not least, we are hosting our chapter’s election.

Please stay tuned!
