AIA Continental Europe - The Mesh Protocol: Distributed Resilience and the 50L Challenge

Event Description

This session presents a dual-strategy approach to urban resilience: the "50L Challenge" for behavioral water conservation and "The Mesh Protocol" for emergency infrastructure. Participants will explore how to transform residential buildings from passive structures into active organisms. By integrating LoRaWAN mesh networks, architects can ensure that critical safety data relating to fire prevention and water management survives even during total grid and Wi-Fi failure. The course demonstrates how to move beyond "deprivation" toward a wellness-based architectural model.

Speaker Bio

Gianlodovico de Mojana di Cologna is a Milan-based architect with over 30 years of experience, specializing in restoration, biophilia, and human-centered design. A graduate of the Politecnico di Milano with an MBA from SDA Bocconi, his career spans from luxury property management to technical direction in Italian design and renewable energy efficiency.

As a certified Fitwel Ambassador and Google UX Designer, Gianlodovico focuses on the intersection of physical space and digital awareness. His current work, notably for the USGBC-CA competition, explores how to reduce water consumption to 50L per person by transforming technical restrictions into experiences of well-being and common value. By combining heritage-inspired solutions, like the Utzon courtyard model, with innovative technologies and sensory design, he aims to create resilient environments that foster measurable behavior change and community engagement.
