AIA Sub-Saharan Africa Update - September 2025

AIA SSA at the 14th AUA Congress & General Assembly

Kinshasa, DRC

The American Institute of Architects Sub-Saharan Africa (AIA SSA) proudly participated in the 14th Africa Union of Architects (AUA) Congress and General Assembly, held in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo, from August 27–30, 2025. The congress brought together architects, urban planners, policymakers, and thought leaders to address the evolving challenges facing African cities.

Theme of the Congress: African Cities in the Face of Industrial Challenges
This year’s theme highlighted the pressing question of how African cities can strengthen their resilience against the pressures of mining, industrial exploitation, and natural disasters. The sessions underscored the urgent need for sustainable planning, innovative design, and proactive policies to safeguard Africa’s urban future.

Panel on Accessibility Standards
A highlight of the congress was a side event panel designed to bring together representatives of the AUA, UIA, and AIA. The discussion focused on the “albatross of accessibility standards” in the African built environment—a crucial issue in the quest for inclusive design. Although AIA International President Yew Kee Cheong was scheduled to participate, he was unable to attend. Nevertheless, the dialogue reinforced a shared global commitment to making accessibility a priority in African cities.

AIA SSA Representation
AIA SSA was well represented by:

  • Arch. Lanre Olusola – President, AIA Sub-Saharan Africa

  • Arch. Florence Nyole – AIA International - Country Representative, Kenya

Their presence and contributions underscored the institute’s dedication to elevating the discourse on sustainable and inclusive urban development in Africa.

Leadership Milestone
The congress also marked an important achievement for AIA SSA. Arch. Lanre Olusola was re-elected, unopposed, as Treasurer of the Africa Union of Architects (2025–2028). This milestone strengthens his role as a leader in African architecture and ensures AIA SSA continues to have a strategic voice and stronger representation at the continental level. At the General Assembly, Francis Sossah (Ivory Coast) was elected President and Sydney Ngoma (Zambia) as Secretary General, alongside other new international officers.

Looking Forward
Through participation in continental forums like the AUA Congress, AIA SSA continues to:

  • Strengthen partnerships with regional and international architectural bodies

  • Empower its members to lead on the global stage of architecture and urbanism
