The AIA Strategic Council’s October 2025 report captures a pivotal moment of transition, reflection, and forward planning for the Institute. As the 2025 study groups concluded their work, the Council advanced a focused set of recommendations to the AIA National Board, distilling more than 25 ideas into 3–5 prioritized proposals addressing long-term challenges facing the profession.
Throughout the year, seven study groups—including AIA of the Future, Climate Responsive Design & Leadership, Connected Communities, and 10-Year Valuation & Future Blueprint—met monthly, supported by two in-person gatherings, virtual assemblies, and targeted “Hot Topic” sprints developed in collaboration with the Board.
October also marked a leadership transition within the Council, with the onboarding of 22 new Councilors for the 2026–2028 term and early preparations for next year’s work. Looking ahead, five new 2026 study group themes have been identified —Regenerative Nation, Housing, Practice, Value, and Neuroarchitecture— to be refined through Governance Week discussions with AIA leadership.
The report also highlights key Institute-wide developments, including the unanimous appointment of Carole Wedge, FAIA, NOMA, LEED AP as AIA’s new EVP/CEO; AIA’s public call for transparency regarding the demolition of the White House East Wing; major investments in architectural research and preservation; and national efforts to address the housing shortage through cross-sector collaboration.
As the Strategic Council transitions toward its 2026–2028 term, this report serves as both a record of progress and a foundation for continued dialogue between members, leadership, and the National Board.
